Friends of 50 years!

We have all made it to France and moved into our villa in the Bandol region of Provence. We have shopped at two markets, eaten some wonderful meals, and laughed a whole lot! It’s so good to spend quality time with dear college friends!

The hop on hop off bus in Marseille… great introduction to the city.
The beautiful Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde. No, unfortunately, we did not tour the inside. Maybe next time.
Jim and Ed, such old friends they decided to dress alike😉
The market in La Citotat. We actually liked it better than the more acclaimed one in Sanary-sur-Mer.
The Villa is stunning!
Our first dinner together. Four ThetaXis, three little sisters and an honorary addition!
Arancini
Slow roasted Iberian Pork
Gnocchi with truffled cream sauce.
Chocolate torte with ice cream and crumble. It was an amazing welcome to Provence meal.
We followed the grape cart to the winery!
A beautiful view at Bunan Winery
Forever friends 😍
Joel Dunn, I thought of you!

We made it!

From our balcony overlooking the Vieux-Port, Marseille

As many of you know, Ed had a medical emergency a month ago. We were not sure he would be cleared or feel up to international travel. Thankfully, he was cleared by all his doctors and over the last week and a half has regained a good deal of his strength. So, for the next 4 weeks there will be a bit of a role reversal on this trip… I will be worrying about Ed vs him worrying about me.

Beautiful Marseille! The view from our balcony in the Hotel La Résidence de Vieux- Port.
A lovely breakfast. I said to Ed that this ambiance is what I love about coming to Europe and it’s so expensive to experience it in USA… I may have gotten a bit of the evil side eye on that one considering what a transatlantic flight costs these days😉

Steamboat Springs

What a fun, vibrant town! We enjoyed our four night stay in the Wyndham Village at Steamboat, courtesy of our dear friends, Jim and Maxine. We yet again benefited from their timeshare… what a treat. We spent three days hiking, biking, playing games and laughing. Friendships are precious but you have to keep them kindled. Mission accomplished ❤️

Hiking up to Fish Creek Falls.
The falls. After a summer of palm trees and sand, the lush mountain forest was delightful.
Riding e-bikes along the Yampa River Trail.
With a stop to explore the lovely (free!) Yampa River Botanical Gardens.
And an apres ride lunch stop at Cabo Taco complete with Charro Beans and crispy tacos, Nanny style!
We ended our visit with a delicious dinner at Seedz. Thanks, Jim and Maxine for introducing us to another beautiful spot in Colorado!

Red Rocks Amphitheater

We finally made it to Red Rocks Amphitheater. We were lucky enough with the timing of our travels to catch Tedeschi Trucks while visiting friends in Colorado. The venue is amazing but bring lots of $$$. The merchandise and the concessions were incredibly expensive. The concert was great though we felt like the jams went on a little too long.

At the entrance
So good to be with my gal pal again🫶🏼
Overlooking Denver, spectacular!
It’s especially nice when the moon rises above it all.

Smokemont and the eastern portion of Smoky Mountain NP

We spent the last 4 nights in a creek side camping site in the Smokemont section. It was so peaceful. The creek ran steady, sounding like a gentle rain throughout the day and night.

The first evening we ventured up to Kuwohi to take in the views from the highest point in the Smokies. It was a short but steady upward climb to the observation tower but it was worth every step!
Forested mountains as far as the eye can see. Let’s keep it that way !
You can see 5 states from the observation tower!
It was very chilly at the top so we left before the sun was setting but this was our view when we descended the mountain!

Smokemont Campground was wonderfully peaceful. We occupied sites F42,F44 & F46 right along the running creek. There are no hookups but generators are allowed in the F loop from 8:00AM to 8:00PM. There is absolutely no cell coverage. It was a great way to unwind.

Chilling 🤗
The old Grist Mill
The Kephart Prong Trail followed the creek with 5 “foot log” crossings. It was a beautiful trail with steady elevation gain.
The beautiful Soco Falls within the Cherokee lands.
From the Newfound Gap Overlook
Again, forested mountains as far as you can see. Our national parks and forests are being threatened by the current administration. What a terrible loss it would be to lose the precious wilderness locations across our country. It is often said that our National Parks are America’s best idea. Let’s not loose sight of that🙏🏻

We bid farewell to the Smokies but we will be back!

The elk gathered to usher us out of the park.
Until next time!

Cades Cove, Smoky Mountains National Park…Bikes, Hikes, Butterflies, Bears, Dear Friends !

We have spent the last 4 days in Cades Cove, camping with the Riegels, the Wingfields and our favorite plus four (the Crowders and the Brauningers) staying in a delightful cabin in nearby Townsend. We had sites 20,21, and 22 of B loop which allowed us to use our generators between the hours of 8:00AM to 8:00PM. This was strictly enforced!

Our first full day we hiked the Middle Prong trail. It was perfect for our group of 10. It followed a creek and each segment was more beautiful than the next. The creek is a major habitat for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. It was remarkable how many we saw along the way!

The swallowtails were both playful and plentiful!
No visit to Cades Cove is complete without a drive around the loop. The Golden Girls had the best seats in the park! We saw at least 15 bears and the vistas along the way were stunning.
We were so fortunate that we were here on the first “Wonderful Wednesday”! The park service closes the loop and it is only open to bikes and hikers. What a pleasure it was to ride leisurely around the loop viewing the bears, the wild turkeys and the gorgeous scenery.

While riding we came across this large adolescent bear enjoying a lunch of leaves. We would have never spied him from a car. At least, that is until someone else did and the bear ham ensued.

Another nice hike makes for happy campers!
Before we left we enjoyed one last loop around the cove. I’m not sure our mode of transportation was park approved but it sure was fun!

One final day of cycling through the Dutch countryside but first the weekly cheese market in Alkmaal.

The Alkmaal Cheese Market held every Friday.
The iconic windmills
Putting my tourist shoes on!
We rode through some charming villages.
Our riding friends in front of our ship. We hope to meet again.
100 miles later (so glad we chose E-bikes), we bid farewell to the Magnifique. I hope it won’t be the last time on this small, but well appointed ship.

Flower Market, the North Sea and Tulips!

Yesterday started with a 6:00 AM wake up to be ready for a short bus ride to the largest flower market in Europe. The visit brought a whole new meaning to the beautiful bouquets and arrangements we enjoy at home.

The carts are stacked with certain types/colors of flowers and buyers bid on them virtually. The mobilized carts then load the flowers onto a buyers cart. It is a bit like Willie Wonka and the Flower Factory!

Next up was a fantastic 30 mile bike ride to the North Sea and through the Dutch countryside. It was an idyllic day.

Never, ever did I think I would touch the North Sea.
Behold!
Our group of riders. We’ve made some new friends 😍
Through the National Dune Reserve. We are all in awe and more than envious of the designated bike trails throughout the country.
More tulips 🌷
And hyacinths! Just imagine the smell from a field of these. That’s the joy of a bike ride.
We ended our ride in the beautiful city of Alkmaar.

Boat Bike Tours… Tulips🌷🌷🌷 Bucket List✅✅✅

We had a fabulous day today riding through the Dutch countryside (and navigating through several towns).

Our group of 37 riders was lead by two team leaders. We stayed to for the most part!
The first look did not disappoint🌷❣️
We rode about 16 miles to reach the Keukenhof Gardens
The display of spring bulbs was incredible. They actually only stay open to the public during the spring bulbs season. The rest of the year is spent preparing for the next! Seven million bulbs and over 800 varieties!
A well earned celebration after another 16 miles back to Harlem. Prost!🥂
We did not have enough time to really explore the city of Harlem , but it was both beautiful and vibrant. There were many beautiful buildings and lots of cafes and bars. We will be sure to spend a few nights here if we return to the. Netherlands.
Our accommodations for the week plus a little luggage!
All aboard ‼️
